We carry out passive fire protection and spray fireproofing work on commercial buildings at all stages of construction and refurbishment. Monokote is a spray-applied cementitious fireproofing product manufactured by GCP Applied Technologies and widely specified by architects and structural engineers for the protection of structural steelwork in commercial buildings. It is applied wet and adheres directly to the steel surface, providing a thermal barrier that slows the rate of temperature rise in the steel during a fire and maintains structural integrity for the required fire resistance period.

FireShield Ireland holds the Irish distribution and application rights for Monokote. We are the only licensed Monokote applicator in Ireland, which means any commercial project in Ireland specifying Monokote is carried out by our team.

Monokote is specified on schools, hospitals, office buildings, retail centres, industrial buildings, and all types of steel-frame commercial construction where a fire resistance rating is required for the structural steelwork.

Intumescent coatings are paint-like products applied to structural steel that expand significantly when exposed to heat, forming an insulating char layer that protects the steel from temperature rise during a fire. They are the most common method of providing fire resistance to exposed structural steel in commercial interiors where the steelwork is part of the architectural design and a spray-applied product would compromise the visual finish.

Unprotected structural steel loses its load-bearing capacity rapidly when exposed to fire. Most structural steel members reach critical temperature within 15 to 30 minutes of exposure to a standard fire. Building regulations in Ireland and Northern Ireland require structural steelwork to be protected to achieve a specified fire resistance period, typically 30, 60, or 90 minutes depending on the building type and occupancy.

We carry out structural steel fireproofing using both spray-applied systems and intumescent coatings, advising on the most appropriate system for each project based on the fire resistance specification, the aesthetic requirements, and the programme.

Passive fire protection encompasses all the measures built into a building's structure that resist the spread of fire and smoke without requiring activation.
